You will be asked to write a 5 page paper on the book Daring Greatly. You have now read the The Gifts of Imperfection, and Daring Greatly. Dig deep and be in the arena! What does that mean to you and how are you going to incorporate everything that you have read not only in to your life but also when dealing with conflict. Again, be insightful, self reflective, and self-aware, while also backing up each “aha” moment with real life circumstances and points from the books.

This weeks material: Orlowski-Yang, J. (Director). (2020). The Social Dilemma [Film]. Netflix. *You will need a Netflix account to access this film.
(200-225 (MAX 225) words not including, citations, quotations, or bibliography): Each week, you will post one Response Journal reflection based upon that week’s content to your assigned discussion board. The Response Journal is an invitation to comment upon what you are reading/viewing in the course, and then to relate this understanding to something within the contemporary cultural moment that is relevant to the study of CMNS. You could consider things like: What is the big idea in the reading(s)/material this week? How does this idea relate to something that you have seen/viewed in the present (or historical) media/communication landscape? Does the material challenge any assumptions that you have? Why do you think the writers are choosing to communicate in this particular way? Who is the audience? How do some of the communication ideas/theories we discuss in the course relate to, or help us to contextualize, their approach? What dominant ideas does the material for the week challenge, or reaffirm? Your response must include AT LEAST 2 quotations in APA 7 (appropriately cited) from the course material. Your response should not simply chronologically re-tell what occurs in the weekly material, but rather critically analyze/engage with one or two key arguments or examples from the course. Writing and critical thinking skills will be considered a primary factor in grading.
Key questions for this week’s class:
What is communication for? Why is communication so important?
How to approach the content of this week’s material:
Communications is a vast and encompassing field of study that covers everything from technology and culture, to identity and social change, to media history and applied media techniques. In our own lives, we are all intimately familiar with both communication technologies and practices of communication. Accordingly, there are numerous ways and spaces for us to explore communication as it relates to our lived experiences and the communicative and symbolic world around us. As such, we begin our course by situating ourselves at the centre of several current debates regarding communication and the current pace of communications change. For this first week’s ‘reading’ we will watch the film, The Social Dilemma (2020). It is a widely viewed Netflix documentary that covers a wide array of critiques, concerns, and observations about social media. The films tagline “The technology that connects us also controls us” suggest something ominous about social media and makes several claims about what you – the participatory audience – can do, and why you should care. As you watch the film, take a few notes about the tone, the mood, and the claims the producers make about communication, in particular the algorithmic architectures the films characters identify (engagement, growth and advertisement).
Consider some of the following questions: According to the film, what is communication for? Why is communication so important? What role does the audience play, if any? What do you make of the language, or metaphors in the film (for example the use of the term addiction)? Are there any recurring themes? How does the film make you feel? How does this relate to your own experiences? Where do you see social media going from here?
