Language in King’s Letter Worksheet
Directions: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” includes many examples of figurative language meant to persuade people to take action. Read the lines from the letter and identify ONE type of figurative language (some excerpts may contain more than one), its meaning, its effect on mood and tone, and its effect on audience. An example has been completed for you. Then, answer the analysis question.
Example:
This movement is nourished by the contemporary frustration over the continued existence of racial discrimination.
•     Type of figurative language: Personification
•     Meaning of figurative language: It means the movement grows because its fed by people’s frustration with racial discrimination
•     Effect on tone and mood: It creates a factual tone and an urgent mood.
•     Effect on audience: Audience will see the civil rights movement as a living thing, which would make it more meaningful.
1     …when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can’t go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see the tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see the depressing clouds of inferiority begin to form in her little mental sky…
•Type of figurative language:
•Meaning of figurative language:
•Effect on tone and mood:
•Effect on audience:
2 Like a boil that can never be cured as long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its pus-flowing ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must likewise be exposed, with all of the tension its exposing creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.
•Type of figurative language:
•Meaning of figurative language:
•Effect on tone and mood:
•Effect on audience:
3     Over and over again I have found myself asking: “Who worships here? Who is their God? Where were their voices when the lips of Governor Barnett dripped with words of interposition and nullification? Where were their voices of support when tired, bruised, and weary Negro men and women decided to rise from the dark dungeons of complacency to the bright hills of creative protest?”
•Type of figurative language:
•Meaning of figurative language:
•Effect on tone and mood:
•Effect on audience:
4     In those days the Church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society.
•Type of figurative language:
•Meaning of figurative language:
•Effect on tone and mood:
•Effect on audience:
5     It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. But I am sure that, if I had lived in Germany during that time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers even though it was illegal.
•Type of figurative language:
•Meaning of figurative language:
•Effect on tone and mood:
•Effect on audience:
Analysis Question: How does Dr. King use figurative language to support his feelings about equal civil rights for African-Americans?

The paper is on the book The Fifth Season by N.K Jemisen
Instructions are as follows: Essays in literature make claims about the content of texts based off of evidence from primary (the book/story/poem itself). This essay should not be:
A) A summary–While there may be moments when you need to “set the scene” and describe the events of a passage or a section of the book, don’t just reiterate the plot of a story or novel.
B) A book report/opinion–Whether you like the story/book or not isn’t relevant to a literary analysis. (I’ve written whole chapters on books I kind of hate). Nor should you make subjective assessments regarding author or character motivations. (“I think she screams because she’s scared.”) Rather, you want to make claims about what a passage or a text means using the language of the text to confirm your claims. If what you’re seeing is there, you should be able to find words, passages, or descriptions that make that clear. Your presentation of this evidence is the way that you confirm your interpretation of the text.
The essay must be no less than five full pages and no more than eight, double-spaced, Times New Roman or Garamond 12-point font with 1″ margins on all sides. There is no limit to maximum length of the essay, but if it reaches ten pages you may wish to consider whether your claim is focused enough or whether there is room to edit for conciseness.
In addition to being of sufficient length and acceptably formatted, a successful essay must include the following:
1) A clear and arguable thesis. Your thesis statement will typically appear in your introduction. It cannot be a question or a statement of fact. It must make a single, focused claim about the text you are analyzing that can be argued. All of your later arguments, evidence, and claims in the essay should point directly back to this thesis.
2) Textual evidence. You must quote the text in order to establish any claim you make about it. If you say that Randy Bragg is a “strong figure in his community,” you must back that up by providing clear examples with pagination.
3) At least two close-readings: related to #2, you will want to have at minimum two close readings of passages in the text.
4) Evidence of proofreading: Essays with numerous errors and problematic sentence structures become unwieldy to read. Be sure to take time go over the essay and:
A) Edit for conciseness–avoid repetition, don’t use five words if you can use two. Try to make every word count.
B) Edit for spelling and grammar–the essay is not graded on this, but if there are a lot of careless errors, it can be penalized for it.
5) A clear organization structure: It should be evident why you move from one point to the next, and how you situate your evidence to make the strongest case for your claim. Your organization should be reliant upon your thesis and aimed at effectively establishing it.
There should be no outside sources for Essay 3. This is a test of your ability to wring meaning from a text. There are also no prompts. You must devise a thesis based off of the material in the novel and your questions concerning it.
I know it says 5 pages but I just need 2-3 to turn in a draft.
Note that everything is ran through turn it in.com for plagarism.
