There are many differences between mitosis and meiosis. One may be that mitosis occurs in all organisms except viruses and meiosis occurs in only plants, animals and fungi. The number one difference though, is that mitosis is a cell division that ends up with 2 daughter cells that have the same number of chromosomes. Where meiosis is a reduction division, which means the chromosome number is halved in the daughter cells. This means that mitosis creates cells with 46 chromosomes and meiosis creates cells with 23 chromosomes.

This is very important because cells are the basic units of organisms. The reason for cell division is because the outside of the cell may not be able to to keep up within as the cell continues to grow. Mitosis has the role of maintaining cell growth and upkeep while meiosis is to reproduce. Typically mitosis happens with somatic cells or even body cells, where on the other hand, meiosis occurs within gamete or sex cells. Lastly, when meiosis breaks down it is divided into two sections. These sections are made up of what are called meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis I is then broken down into prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I and telophase I. While meiosis II is broken down into prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, and telophase I. During each of these different phases, special roles take phase during each one helping the cells divide.

With all these differences being true, there are also quite a few similarities. As said before, mitosis occurs in all organisms which means that both mitosis and meiosis both occur in plants. Another similarity would be that they both start with a diploid parents cell. Lastly, they both produce new cells, while the cells undergo DNA replication.
