Please read the article linked here and respond to the following questions.
How colonial-era debt helped shape Haiti’s poverty and political unrest
1. What was the debt Haiti was held accountable to pay to France?
2. What is your response to this debt considering what you know now about Postcolonialism, the devastation of the slave trade, and how Haiti became an independent nation?
3. What is the situation with Jamaica? How does the two compare when we take their colonial histories into account?
4. What do you think France could have done to repair their relationship with Haiti and even improve Haiti’s chances for success? Explain.
5. The article suggests that this is an opportunity for America to become more honest about our own history of slavery and current issues of racism in America. What do you think about this?

QW #4
Ch. 10 from Collapse “Malthus in Africa”
Please read chapter 10 from your class text and respond to the following prompts.
How does Diamond describe the reasons for the population explosion across Africa today rather than in the past?
How many people were killed in Rwanda during the genocide? How does this match up to other instances of genocide around the world (Diamond make some calculations, please feel free to share).
How does Diamond explain root causes for genocide that are not strictly social? He makes a distinction between ethnic violence and other causes of violence in Rwanda.
Is high population density an unequivocal sentence to poverty and violence? If your answer is yes, please elaborate. If your answer is no, please give an example of a society that has high population density and social success.
Please discuss characterization of Rwanda when we said, “…modern Rwanda illustrates a case where Malthus’s worst-case scenario does seem to have been right.”
Please spend some time reflecting on what you’ve read here and learned about Rwanda. I’m tempted to give you more of a prompt here, but I’ll refrain and allow you to share your thoughts and feelings. All are welcome here.

We’ve learned about many different cultures and discussed a number of anthropological concepts over the course of this semester, and are now examining Engelke’s last main chapter (9) on “Nature”. For this last paper, answer the following questions in a 500-word minimum essay format.
1. Returning to the work of Marilyn Strathern in Melanesia, what is the example Engelke gives for how the people of Mount Hagen think differently than we typically do (p. 256)? Describe the nature/culture split in the Western thought tradition – what is it and when did the split take its current form (pp. 256-257)? How would pet owners in our culture be viewed by people from other cultural traditions (p. 259)? Why?
2. Margaret Lock, a medical anthropologist, studied the people of Japan in relation to their culture’s unique values and traditions. What are the values that “orient the attitudes of many Japanese” toward death (p. 263)? How are these values different from attitudes about death in Western cultures (pp. 260-262)?
3. Of the many anthropological concepts (vocabulary terms, research approaches, intellectual movements) and/or cultures described in the lectures, textbook, and videos, which were the most interesting and/or challenging for you and why? Describe what aspect(s) (values, kinship, gift giving, traditions, etc.) of that culture or concept were the most engaging for you. Has it changed your way of thinking about other culture(s)? If so, describe how and why. Remember, be specific and detailed in your paragraph. Cite page numbers from the textbook where applicable, use quotation marks for direct quotes, and give credit where credit is due for others’ ideas and statements.
Please write this in an essay form and do not restate the questions while writing the paper.

Many cultures have ethno-etiologies that provide explanations for illness that are not based in science. From a biomedical perspective, the non-scientific medical treatments provided in these cultures have a low likelihood of success. Despite this, people tend to believe that the treatments are working.
Why do you think people tend to be satisfied with the effectiveness of the treatments they receive that are based on the ethno-etiologies?
In transcultural nursing practice, why would it be important for nurses to understand such ethno-etiologies when nurses interact with patients of different cultures?

You can discuss new ideas, skills, and where you felt you learned and grew as a student.

You will write a 600 word summary of what you learned over the course of the semester, please place this at the end. You can discuss new ideas, skills, and where you felt you learned and grew as a student.
I uploaded a document with all the topics we covered in class, and some powerpoints as well.
